“He tilts his forehead down to rest against mine and pulls me closer. His skin, his whole being radiates heat from being so near the fire, and I close my eyes, soaking in his warmth. I breathe in the smell of snow-dampened leather and smoke and apples, the smell of all those wintry days we shared before the Games. I don’t try to move away. Why should I anyway? His voice drops to a whisper. “I love you.” That’s why.”  

I lie with my head in Peeta’s lap, making a crown of flowers while he fiddles with my hair, claiming his practising his knots. After a while, his hands go still, “what?” I ask.
“I wish I could freeze this moment, right here, right now, and live in it forever” he says.

“Greeting to the final contestants of the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games. The earlier revision has been revoked. Closer examination of the rule book has disclosed that only one winner may be allowed,” he says. “Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favor.”

They’re already taking my future! They can’t have the things that mattered to me in the past!

“If he wants me broken, then I will have to be whole.”

“Let me go!” I snarl at him, trying to wrest my arm from his grasp.

“I can’t,” he says.”

I heard him say one word before the drigs pulled me under, I realised later that what he said was ‘always”  

My spirit. This is a new thought. I’m not sure exactly what it means, but it suggests I’m a fighter. In a sort of brave way. It’s not as if I’m never friendly. Okay, maybe I don’t go around loving everybody I meet, maybe my smiles are hard to come by, but i do care for some people. ——Katniss
